my story

granddaughters was founded and named after Ammie Kae, granddaughter of Ammie and Kay

Dear Reader,

I am so grateful to be sharing this space with you here on this corner of the web. My hope is that you are finding yourself here, as you ponder integrating more mental, emotional and spiritual healing into your life and, if so, I am beyond encouraged by your brave thinking and courage to begin.

Not too long ago, I found myself at the beginning of my own healing journey, apprehensive and in search of support and direction. On this journey, I believe it was the lack of representation and diversity in therapists, perspective and treatment that inspired me into the mental health field myself.

Growing up as a dark skinned, Black girl with 4c hair, I struggled to associate my identity with concepts like beauty and success, which manifested as self hatred, low self esteem, trauma and poor mental health. For years, I even hated the name my parents gave me, but now I understand it as a foreshadowing of how my healing would heal all the women in my family.

— Ammie Kae Brooks, Founder

I wasn’t aware of the ways oppressive systems and generational trauma contributed to how I was feeling, and I struggled to find clinicians who integrated this complex part of my identity into treatment. At granddaughters, I am dedicated to curating therapeutic and healing spaces for Black women and girls, first and foremost, with a commitment to individualized treatment and in depth assessment.

I use modalities derived from evidenced based research such as somatic healing, dialectical behavior therapy, and psychodynamic cognitive therapies, alongside cultural and generational strengths from the Black diaspora to optimize and personalize your healing process. This often includes arts, movement, technology, and various other manifestations that fulfill your unique vision for therapy. I invite you into a gentle, you-centered approach to healing, and I am so excited to start and witness this evolution in you, your little one, or your entire family!

Sending love!
